SNAKE // Animal Messenger

SNAKE // Animal Messenger
Snakes come in varied colours and sizes. They are usually patterned to blend in with their natural environment, but seasonally shed their skin to start anew. The shedding process serves many purposes: to remove parasites that may have attached to the old skin, and to allow for growth. Skin shedding is required for growth, as their skin doesn’t stretch or expand; instead, the snake will grow a whole new bigger skin underneath the old layer which it sheds as it grows.
Without snakes, our ecosystem would suffer a great imbalance and humans would endure a world filled with many more rodents and pests. Although snakes usually target small mammals and insects for food, they have been known to kill and consume large mammals like deer and sheep.
Although they have no legs, snakes are readily mobile, fast movers, agile climbers and (surprisingly) good swimmers. Snakes rely on their environment to regulate their temperature and intuitively reposition themselves or cue hibernation in order to keep their temperature stable. They use their tongue to smell and they look out for prey and potential threats alike by feeling vibrations through the ground.
The snake teaches us the need for regular cleansing and shedding of layers within ourselves, such as unhelpful habits, patterns of thinking, and old beliefs.
As cold-blooded reptiles, snakes also rely heavily on the heat of the sun for energy and personal warmth, which shows us that in order to continue to grow, we must continually seek light as a means to recharge and maintain our energy levels.
