MANTA RAY // Animal Messenger

MANTA RAY // Animal Messenger
Manta rays are gentle giants of the ocean, having the largest brain to body ratio of any living fish in the ocean. They can be identified via their black and white body markings, as well as their blanket-like appearance as they glide throughout the water.
Although they can look quite intimidating - often referred to as “devil fish” because of their markings and horn shaped fins - mantas (as apposed to stingrays) are quite harmless. Choosing to glide gently through the ocean with a tail spine that does not have any functioning defence mechanisms, they filter-feed on plankton and other small crustaceans through their ear-like rounded scoopers that feature 300 useless teeth.
Mantas must continuously move to keep oxygenated water passing over their gills so that they can breathe, and, like whales, are known to occasionally jump out from the water and breach (although this behaviour is documented as a bit of a mystery).
We can see that this graceful giant of the sea - although physically intimidating - chooses to move through life using graceful, fluid movements with minimal impact on the environment around it. This beautiful creature commands such a powerful presence in the ocean and teaches us the importance of not judging a book by its cover.
Emotions that we fear or have previously judged as⠀
‘bad’ emotions to feel are often the ones we really need to experience and gently move through in order to find our grace and inner peace. No emotions should be feared or categorised as negative. Sure, they can cause us to feel things that are uncomfortable; but the manta reminds us that nothing⠀
is truly all black or all white.
In fact, we find the perfect balance when we glide somewhere in the
middle.
The manta ray teaches us the importance of always moving forward and living in the moment - never allowing ourselves to truly stop and stagnate - and to use our energy wisely and consistently. They remind us to focus on finding balance and inner harmony and really feeling into it, more than living on the extreme ends of the spectrum of anything and wanting to be elsewhere.
