Desert dwelling camels are hardy and robust survivors of many of the planets hardest conditions.
They have adapted many unique qualities allowing them to thrive in hot, dusty, arid areas of the world including a thick coat that protects them from the heat, superior digestive systems that allow for maximum water retention, a third eyelid and long eyelashes and ear hair to stop sand from getting in, their iconic hump/s that allow them to store fat thus enabling their bodies to retain water and stay cooler easier and thick lips allow them to eat sharp and thorny plant foods that other animals cannot.
In Mongolia, they celebrate the camel at an annual festival which shows us just how important it is to honour who we are and what we are able to endure and thrive on, and to trust that others will acknowledge and celebrate you when you choose to do the same for yourself.
They are well camouflaged in with the colours of the desert and can survive for up to six months without food or water. When water is available, camels can drink and rehydrate faster than any other mammal.
They represent living a truly nomadic lifestyle, being able to endure the harshest environments and longest treks in the desert in order to experience the world in ways others simply are unable to. A symbol of endurance, the camel can teach us to celebrate our unique circumstances and trust that we are capable of continuing to thrive through life’s extreme conditions.
Camels are very social and live together with their herd family groups. When greeting each other, they will blow in each other’s faces, like an affectionate kiss between loved ones. We can see that celebrating the little things, like water, friendship and freedom can allow for us to be grateful for the things we do have and not to sweat about the things we don’t.
